If the last time you looked in your loft was to store the Chrismas Decorations, it is now time to grab a flash light and find out what space you have got. Let us be realistic about the possibilities, and consider the size, head room and shape of the available space in your loft.
To plan a Loft conversion your first step should be to make sure that your loft space is suitable for converting into a new loft room. Lingfield Lofts can carry out a FREE loft survey, with no strings attached.
We will check that the existing headroom in the roof space is sufficient and check to see if extensive structural alterations will be necessary.

- How much headroom is available in your loft?’
Lingfield Loft Conversions – Using a tape measure, note the ceiling height – To put it simply; if you can’t stand upright in the roof space then it is unlikely that you will be able to plan a loft conversion without considerable expense being allocated to the project.
If however you can stand upright, and even better raise an arm above your head, then you can start to think seriously about converting your loft space. Ideally a minimum amount of headroom is 2.2 to 2.3 meters. This is measuring in the centre of the roof space; Through installing dormer windows this space can be increased or multiplied.
Most UK properties with lofts can be converted. If your property was build prior to 1960 or has a steeply pitched roof than there should be nothing to worry about and a loft conversion will be quiet easily.
The steeper the slope (or pitch) of the roof, the more suitable it will be.
Properties built between 1962 and 1972 tend to have shallower roof pitch. Having a very shallow pitched roof may mean that roof will have to be raised.

– How would you enter your new space?
Access is an important consideration and building regulations stipulate that if the loft is to be turned into a bedroom, bathroom, study or playroom, it must have a permanent staircase. The stairs leading to it need not be as wide as the steps on the lower flights. The most minimal arrangements resemble a fixed ladder and a spiral staircase offers an attractive solution where space is tight.

When weighing up the pros and cons of converting, determine the space you will lose on the floor below to accommodate the new stairs, and check in particular the head height available, as not all houses will automatically have enough space to accommodate a traditional staircase.
Dormer windows extend out of the original roof and are a way of adding headroom. They can be the size of a single window or they can span a sizeable chunk of the roof and contain two or more windows. It’s also possible to extend to the side from a hipped roof – in other words build out from the sloped side of the roof to make the edge flush with the exterior wall.
